What is Copycat Innovation? Copycat Innovation is about adapting a proven solution to come out with an innovation, thereby minimizing risk and optimizing success. In short, it is about taking what works best and improving on it. Copycat Innovation is not about a full-scale imitation of an existing product, service or process. Intelligence, creativity and innovation are required. It has a structured methodology. Copycat Innovation does not challenge copyright. Nor does it involve plagiarism, counterfeiting or other illegal infringement of intellectual property rights. Copycat Innovation involves the borrowing, modification and adaptation of ideas of existing products, services, marketing systems and technologies to carve a competitive niche in the marketplace. Creator of the Copycat Innovation™ System The Copycat Innovation™ System was created and developed by Dr. Yew Kam Keong , better known as Dr.YKK, the Chief Mind Unzipper of Mindbloom Consulting. The concept of Copycat Innovation was inspired by the concept of Creative Imitation in the book, “Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” by the father of modern management, the late Peter Drucker. The major difference is that while Peter Drucker uses creativity to achieve imitation as the end result, Dr.YKK uses imitation as a starting point to develop an innovation. The methodical approach to the 7 Levers of Copycat Innovation™ System was inspired by the works of The Six Thinking Hats by Edward de Bono and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by the late Stephen Covey. After developing the 7 Levers of Copycat Innovation™ System, Dr.YKK came across the highly acclaimed book by Prof Oded Shenkar, Copycats: How Smart Companies Use Imitation to Gain a Strategic Edge . His work on the subject of copycat validated Dr.YKK’s approach to innovation. He coined the term “Imovation (imitation+innovation)” which basically similar to Dr.YKK’s concept of Copycat Innovation. The major difference is that Prof. Oded Shenkar did not develop a methodology to implement imovation in his book. Contact Dr.YKK - Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
